How often do you get to visit a butterfly farm?
Educational activities for children and adults in Massachusetts and New England.
What could be more magical than a field trip to a butterfly farm? Of all the activities you help to plan, organize, or attend, this will be among the most memorable. Our exhibit is set in the woodlands of Wilbraham Mountain in western Massachusetts, looking out over a beautiful pond.
Tour the exhibit, and learn more about the life cycle of the monarch. See the rearing areas, where butterflies are bred and raised. Lean in, and get a closer look at butterflies in various stages. Here you will find out the difference between a host plant and a nectar plant - both necessary to support the life cycle of a butterfly. Ask as many questions as you want!
We have 40 years experience breeding butterflies, so we ought to be able to answer
them.
A 30-minute slideshow presentation, offered several times throughout the day, describes the life cycle of the butterfly. Our presentation also includes pictures of the monarch population which has migrated to Michoacan, Mexico.
After your visit, enjoy your picnic lunch by the pond. No matter what your age, this will be a field trip to remember.
Think globally, act locally. Plant a butterfly garden.
This is an opportunity--especially for children--to think globally, act locally. Too often children are asked to save the whales, the rainforest, the earth - all overwhelming concepts to a child. Children live in the moment. As part of our educational program, we encourage children to plant a butterfly garden. This activity allows them to do something locally, and experience the results in a short time.
